2048 : the game

2048 is an online puzzle game created by Gabriele Cirulli, a young talented italian man (19 years old).

This version of the game has been released on March, 9th 2014 by Gabriele on his Twitter.

The game principle itself is not revolutionary, as it has been inspired by many other existing games, like the 1024 iOS game or the excellent Threes (not using powers of 2).

The unexpected success of this 2048 game version is a mix between some game improvements, the simplicity and the quality of its graphics & animations, and a perfect release time that brings it to be virally shared on social networks...

Technically, all the 2048 game is made using only HTML, CSS and JAVASCRIPT : simple, elegant, portable and efficient.

In all cases, this is a VERY addictive puzzle-game that you should LOVE, as explained by its creator himself : « I am your productivity's worst nightmare. » !

Play to the game 2048

The goal of the game is to merge numbers together (powers of 2) in order to reach the ultimate '2048' tile and win the game !

The 2048 game area is a 4x4 grid with 16 squared slots. At the beginning of the game, you have two squares (also called « tiles ») with a '2' number inside.

When you make 2 tiles with the same number inside join, they merge into a new one with a number that is the addition of the 2 previous one : 2+2=4, 4+4=8, ... 1024+1024=2048 !

To move the tiles on the grid, you just have to choose a direction (top, right, bottom or left). All the tiles moves to the choosen direction, until they merge with a tile having the same number or are blocked by a tile with a different number.

On a computer, simply use the 4 keyboard arrows. On a mobile device with touch interface (like an iOS or Android device), swipe with your finger to the desired direction.

Tips & tricks for 2048

As you can see, rules are very simple... but the goal to achieve is not so easy to reach !

The best strategy to adopt in order to have a chance to win the game seems to be « the corner method ».

First, choose one of the 4 grid corners : top-left, top-right, bottom-left or bottom-right corner.

Then, the principle is to ALWAYS keep the tile with the greatest number on that corner of the game area. More generally, follow this principle for other tiles : try to keep the tiles with a big number close to that corner with the greatest one.

Unfortunately, there are some cases where you will have no other option than moving this greatest tile from that corner... The best thing to do is to make your move and go back immediately to the corner, praying for a '2' or a '4' not to appear on the corner...

If you didn't managed to come back to the corner in a few moves, I advise you to start a new game...
